Taking in the History Outside of Las Vegas

Stay awhile at this brewpub in nearby Boulder City, where housemade brews and regional and national favorites are all on tap. The lunch menu has cutely named creations like the Kilowatt Slider and the Best Dam Wings, as a nod to the Hoover Dam.

This 30-acre site memorializes the history of Nevada, from pre-historic to modern times. Outside of the museum building itself are a candlelight wedding chapel, railroad cottage, and several homes.

This 2016 art installation by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone is a wonder in the desert. Its made of seven towers of colorful boulders stacked up over 30 feet high. It stands in stark relief next to the landscape and offers a commentary on the colorfulness of man-made towns in this part of the world, like Las Vegas. And it's a great place to grab an Instagram of your trip.

Just off the highway sits a ghost town: Goodsprings. Pull in to the Pioneer Saloon and enjoy a Ghost Burger and take in a century of history from this boom town that went boom.

Stop for a neat Instagram moment at the World's Tallest Thermometer. At 134 feet tall, it's quite a sight to see out in the Mojave desert. It's all lights and flash, so it's a fun nighttime feature to capture.
